Wellness Solutions

What advice do you have for an employer who is just starting to build a culture of wellness and engagement?

Scott Wagner

Senior Wellness Solutions Consultant

Take a holistic approach to employee well-being, starting with the question, “What do our employees need to thrive at work and at home?” Successful, happy employees are more productive, and more willing to commit to healthier lifestyles. Investing in the success of the employee leads to higher employee engagement, which ultimately reduces costs in the long run. The ConnectCare3 Wellness Solutions team has the expertise to help employers take a strategic approach to building a culture of health and the resources to help realize their vision for greater employee well-being.

My advice to the employer would be to share your excitement about wellness during daily communications, let employees know you care about their well-being and the well-being of their families, ask employees about their wellness interests, and ultimately lead by example. While it can feel overwhelming for some, it is helpful to recognize that establishing and sustaining workplace wellness is an ongoing process, and ConnectCare3 Wellness Solutions Consultants partner with you to do the heavy lifting for you. Further, we will strategically help you take simple steps to implement wellness in a way that is relative to your work environment. Whether it’s home mailers, breakroom postings, email newsletters, or our wellness platform and app, together we can establish solutions to help engage your employees with the education and services aligned to the wellness goals of your organization.

First of all, it is vital to have the leadership team’s support. Without leadership standing behind employee wellness initiatives, you are constantly going to be fighting battles to move forward. Secondly, it’s helpful to have either a Wellness Committee and/or a few Wellness Champions who interact well with their co-workers and can be the conduit to get wellness initiatives out to employees, encourage employees to participate and take suggestions/ideas/feedback back to the Wellness Committee or HR.  Employees are sometimes leery of HR being involved in their health/wellness, so a committee of their co-workers, or at the very least a Wellness Champion or 2, can help to build trust and hopefully participation.

Creating a culture of wellness starts from the top; to be successful, leaders not only need to believe in the importance of health and wellness, but also set an example by promoting work-life balance and participating in wellness activities themselves. Next, in order to get buy-in from employees, it’s important to ask them for feedback on their wants/needs regarding health and wellness, and then use their feedback when designing a wellness program. Surveys are a great way to get this feedback, and this is something that ConnectCare3 can help employers to administer.

Don’t feel like you are on your own in establishing a wellness culture for your team. Find your wellness champion employees and recruit them to be a part of the process. Whether that is establishing monthly or quarterly meetings with those individuals to determine what activities could benefit the group as a whole and drive them to healthier decisions, or maybe putting out an online survey that goes out to the entire employee population with questions about what wellness activities they would like to see at work. You also have the ability to work with the ConnectCare3 Wellness Consulting team at your disposal to help establish some of these practices.

How could ConnectCare3 help support an employee wellness program that’s fully established and functioning well?

Scott Wagner

Senior Wellness Solutions Consultant

The ConnectCare3 Wellness Solutions Team can help employers connect to resources that will enhance even a well-established, successful wellness program. Our weekly emails and bi-monthly well-being webinars provide reputable, current education on wellness topics relevant to today’s healthcare landscape. We can design targeted health education campaigns using our HealthyU learning modules and resource library to improve employee health literacy. Combined with ConnectCare3’s highly personal, one-on-one clinical services when appropriate, employees have the tools they need to improve their health, and the health of their families, in a meaningful way.

For employers who already have a well-established employee wellness program in place, my first response as a ConnectCare3 Wellness Solutions Consultant would be, “Way to go!” The goal of ConnectCare3 is not to replace a successful program, but to simply come alongside the employer to see how our services could potentially supplement or even enhance its culture of wellness. Perhaps it’s a certain one-on-one clinical service of interest we can provide to employees and their families, a feature on our platform and app, or a topic-specific webinar that can be prepared to further engage employees and keep them interested in their own health. It can only be an advantage for an employer to know they have ample resources and support to continuously have a successful wellness program in the workplace.

If we haven’t already, I recommend doing an overview of the ConnectCare3 clinical services so employees have a full understanding of the services. If the group has not yet implemented the ConnectCare3 wellness platform/app, that is another topic to explore. Depending on participation, we can evaluate the possibility of wellness challenges with or without incentives. We can also support groups with educational materials, such as handouts, webinars and HealthyU courses. We are always open to brainstorming with groups; each group is unique and we take the time to understand the employee population and the best way to communicate with employees, for example, and tailor our support around the group’s interests and needs.

A great first step is to make sure that employees are aware of the clinical services that ConnectCare3 offers. Our team is available to provide you with resources about our services, and to present to employees. Even if you’ve promoted our services in the past, it’s always a good idea to remind employees about our offerings.  Our wellness platform and app is our newest offering, and includes wellness challenges, a lifestyle assessment, self-paced health and wellness courses, and access to the Mayo Clinic’s resource library. The platform and app would be a perfect addition to an already established wellness program. In addition, our team can provide you with educational resources such as flyers, email newsletters, and webinars on a variety of different health and wellness topics. We know that many individuals in HR and leadership have many responsibilities, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for you to continue to provide a robust wellness program to your employees.

We can provide additional support in the form of vetting vendors for onsite health screenings, reviewing data claims to see if there are any missed opportunities with a certain demographic of your employee population, and we can help take some of the burden of managing your wellness program tracking by adding the group to our new wellness platform. The platform will be able to track participation in certain wellness related activities and provide reporting seamlessly, so the HR team is not left rummaging through spreadsheets to determine who qualifies for an incentive and who does not.
