Jannifer Cayless, BSN, RN, NBC-HWC

Wellness Nurse Educator

How long have you worked for ConnectCare3?

This summer marked 12 years with ConnectCare3. My original role was as a nurse navigator. After completing the Duke Health & Well-Being Coach Training and expanding my skill set as a board-certified health and wellness coach, I transferred to the Chronic Disease Management and Prevention Team in 2021. My current role as Wellness Nurse Educator is supporting the Chronic Disease Management and Prevention and Wellness Solutions teams as a clinician and nurse educator. My goal is to promote health literacy for patients, employees, and employer groups so they can understand the health information needed to make appropriate health decisions and enjoy their best health possible.

Any prior work experience that you would like to share?

As a seasoned career nurse with thirty-five plus years of experience, I possess a wide-ranging clinical background with experience in a local emergency department, as well as areas of oncology, behavioral health, surgery, community health, and education.

In your opinion, why is the “power of positivity” so important as it relates to someone’s health and wellness journey?

The evidence-based principles found in positive psychology cultivate a greater mental wellbeing, as well as a greater physical wellbeing. For example, people who practice optimism and gratitude tend to experience better health outcomes.

In your work with ConnectCare3, are there any “power of positivity” patient insights that you can share?

When my patients want to get from A to Z they are often disheartened and hopeless. Then when their health coach or nurse navigator instructs them how to get from A to Z step by step- A to B, B to C,  C to D, etc. – they become hopeful and believe by taking small steps they can affect their health. They are motivated to change their lifestyle or make informed healthcare decisions because of a second opinion with a well-credentialed specialist.

How can someone utilize ConnectCare3 to learn more about the benefits of positivity?

When partnering with a health coach or nurse navigator, a patient is given the resources and tools to help them understand their diagnosis, treatment plan, and/or lifestyle changes that empowers them to make confident and informed healthcare decisions for the best outcome possible. This naturally strengthens a patient’s optimism and hope, as well as creates a meaningful connection to a compassionate professional. To this end, they harness their power of positivity

How long have you worked for ConnectCare3?

This summer will mark 6 years with CC3. I work as a health coach for the Chronic Disease Management and Prevention Program and as tobacco cessation coach for our tobacco cessation program. I support my patients and clients by helping them make and sustain long-term, healthy lifestyle change that supports their optimal health and wellbeing.

In your opinion, why is the “power of positivity” so important as it relates to someone’s health and wellness journey?

When individuals harness their power of positivity, they can transform their mind. When they transform their mind, they can transform their life and enjoy a life filled with meaning, purpose, health, and wellbeing. Sure it’s hard work committing to a new routine/thought process, but it’s worth every moment of commitment to harnessing your power of positivity.

In your work with ConnectCare3, are there any “power of positivity” patient insights that you can share?

When my patients harness their power of positivity, they shift their mindset from one of self-defeat to self-empowerment. I see a major transformation occur. My patients are better suited to overcome obstacles such as a busy schedule or unforeseen circumstances. They can problem solve and easily exercise their creativity in developing practical solutions to setbacks that occur. They’re more successful long-term with their health goals as they’ve learned strategies that support their healthy routines.
